Torn or burnt banknotes? Swap them at a bank

Wang kertas koyak, terbakar atau rosak: tukar di bank (BNM)

Torn, burnt or ink-stained banknotes still have value. Take them to any bank: if 2/3 or more of the original note is left and it has no marks or writing, the bank can swap it the same day. Doubtful cases, including termite-eaten notes, old demonetised currency and tampered coins, go to Bank Negara for assessment and the money is paid into your bank account.

  1. Gather notes that are torn, burnt, badly crumpled or ink-stained, including old notes stashed at home. Don't tape them together or write on them.
  2. Take them to the counter at any bank. Fill in the bank's form and ask for proof of exchange. If 2/3 or more of the original size is left, there are no marks on the Agong's portrait or political slogans, and it hasn't been written on, the bank swaps it the same day.
  3. Doubtful cases (termite-eaten, badly burnt or ink-stained notes, say) are not swapped the same day. These, along with old demonetised currency and tampered coins, are sent by the bank to Bank Negara for assessment. After assessment, the money is paid into your bank account. Under BNM's standard, a piece over half but under 2/3 of the note gets half value; under half gets nothing.
  4. Got a full coin jar? Feed it into a Coin Deposit Machine (CoDM) at selected banks so it goes straight into your account. Check locations on your bank's website.
