What is STR 2027?

STR is government cash aid for low and middle-income households, seniors without a spouse and (for SARA) low-income singles. It is run by LHDN (HASiL) with the Ministry of Finance.

In the Budget 2027 speech, the STR and SARA allocation for 2027 rises to RM16 billion from RM15 billion. Every STR recipient will get SARA of up to RM150 a month (RM1,800 a year), covering up to 9 million recipients.

STR and SARA are differentSTR is cash paid to your bank account. SARA is credit on your MyKad for basic goods at registered shops. You don't apply for SARA separately; it follows your STR approval.

Who can apply for STR?

The STR 2027 leaflet is not out yet. The rules below are the STR 2026 rules from LHDN's official leaflet, and Budget 2027 uses the same categories.

This table is copied from MOF's Budget 2027 measures summary (Appendix 1). STR figures are cash a year; SARA is MyKad credit a year.

Extra for poor and hardcore-poor householdsPer the same table, poor and hardcore-poor households in eKasih get monthly SARA of up to RM250 a month (RM3,000 a year).

For comparison, the STR 2026 leaflet lists STR of RM700 to RM2,200 plus SARA of RM1,200 a year for households earning RM2,500 or less. For 2027 the cash part for this group is smaller but SARA rises to up to RM150 a month (up to RM1,800 a year), so the maximum yearly total for a household with no children goes from RM1,900 to RM2,000, and stays the same for households with children.

Existing recipients: do you need to reapply?

LHDN says applicants who haven't updated their STR application for three years in a row must update it for STR 2027 so their details are current and accurate.
